Curfew in parts of Guntur: Mosque blast
Curfew was clamped on Monday in parts of Guntur town of
Andhra Pradesh, where a bomb exploded in a mosque, triggering
rioting Sunday night, as the situation continued to be tense.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu along
with Home Minister T Devender Goud and Director General
of Police H J Dora rushed to the city to review the situation
and instill confidence into minorities.
Police sources said curfew was imposed in the police East
circle limits comprising Kothapeta, Lalapeta and the Old
Guntur area, where miscreants went on the rampage, setting
on fire about 20 State-owned road transport corporation
buses and looting shops.
A bandh like situation was prevailing elsewhere in the town
and in some parts of the district, including Mangalagiri
and Pedakakani as a majority of the shopkeepers downed their
shutters and with the RTC maintaining only skeleton services.
Security was tightened in the town, especially in places
of worship. Central Rapid Action Force personnel and armed
reserve police were deployed. Police pickets were posted
in all vulnerable areas, including the sensitive Wynchipet
and Islampet.
In Vijayawada, shops in the One Town area inhabited by those
belonging to the minority community, remained closed, a
report from Vijayawada said. (UNI)
