Annie Besant, Do you remember the famous personality who was very familiar in our social text books when we are schooling? Yes, Annie Besant was a prominent British socialist, theosophist, women’s right activist, writer, orator and supporter of Irish and Indian self-rule.

Do you know that Besant is the member of Indian National Congress? Yes, Annie has also involved in Indian politics. Annie helped India in launching the Home Rule League for democracy in India and dominion status within the empire. She was elected as the president of the Indian National Congress in late 1917.

Born into a middle class family of Irish origin on 1st October 1847, Besant fought for the causes which she thought were right they are: Freedom of thought, women’s rights, secularism, birth control, Fabian socialism and worker’s rights. She was also a leading member of National Secular Society.

Annie Besant has also written small columns for the National Reformer, the newspaper of the NSS to earn weekly wages. For the cause to protest against unemployment, many have died, wounded, she was jailed and that events were called as Bloody Sunday.

Being a prolific writer and practiced stump orator, she gave a total of 66 public lectures in one year. Google India on the account of her birth anniversary designed their logo today to make the whole country see that.

The Doodle shows an image of gray-haired old women none other than Besant resting on a rocking chair with New India, the newspaper she served as editor during the First World War. The Central Hindu College at Benares was established by the Besant when she was in India.
