The Centre today increased the tuition fee for BTech courses at the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) from Rs 70,000 to Rs 1.25 lakh a year. Those seeking admission to the current academic session will have to pay the revised fee. The counselling began today.

Ashok De, the NIT Patna director and chairman of the Central Seat Allocation Board, which has as members NIT representatives who coordinate with IITs on joint counselling, told The Telegraph that the decision to hike the fee was taken by the NIT Council last October.

"We will give full waiver on tuition fee to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students and those with parental income of less than Rs 1 lakh a year. Students with annual parental incomes between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 5 lakh will have to pay one-third of the fee," De said.

"Government institutions usually charge low tuition fees. Till today, we were under the impression that the NIT fee is Rs 70,000. It is unfair if it is increased to Rs 1.25 lakh, that too in the middle of the admission process," a student said.

An NIT director said the fee should not have been revised after the admission process started. "The tuition fee is revised in the month of January or February for students who take admission in June and July," the director said.
