With the legal battle seeking entry of women into the Sabarimala temple of Kerala still on, the Parsuram temple in Garhwal's Jaunsar Bawar region has decided to get rid of its 400-year-old tradition and allow the entry of women and Dalits inside the famous temple.

The temple management has now announced that everyone will be allowed inside the temple in future.

Quoting the chairman of the temple management committee, a news report said, the decision has been taken "in a bid to move with the times".

"This region is on the path of progress. Our literacy rate has gone up and people want scenarios to change," said Jawahar Singh Chauhan,  Chairman of the committee.

In the past few months, Dalits of the region had held several protests condemning these strictures.

The temple management's this move has been hailed by the Dalit community.
