A huge python that could be the longest ever found has mysteriously died in Malaysia after giving birth.

The reticulated python is eight metres long and weighs over 250kg, an official told reporters.

It was found in a construction site in Paya Terubong, a tourist hub of Penang. It later died after laying an egg. "We are so sad this happened," he said.

"We have rescued many other snakes and animals before. We're not sure why the snake died."We fed it mice, other meats and gave (it) water, just like we gave other snakes in the past” he added.

Questions have been raised about the treatment of the snake, with video posted to a Malaysian news site showing a man kicking it.

Reticulated pythons are found in south-east Asia and widely considered the longest reptile species.

The longest snake on official record is the reticulated python Medusa, which stretches 7.67 metres, according to The Guinness World Records.

Medusa is still alive and well, and is kept at The Edge of Hell Haunted House in Kansas City, Missouri.
