Militants attack army camps at Uri and Soura, J&K

Even as Baramulla district of Kashmir is about to go for third phase of polls on December 9, there was a terror attack on an army camp in the Uri area. Six militants, eight soldiers including one officer and three police men were killed in a fierce gun battle that ensued. The attack happened at 3.10am on the camp at Mohra in Uri Tehsil. IG of Police of Kashmir, AG Mir confirmed the deaths. The terrorists may have entered through the POK; the same is being investigated, the officials said. The attack comes in the wake of elections four days later in Uri and six more constituencies in the district. The area, north-west of Srinagar houses a large army base. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is due to campaign in the area, next week. Just a few days back, there was another attempt by the terrorists to infiltrate near Handwara area of Kupwara district. In an attempt to foil the infiltration bid, one army personnel was killed in addition to the six terrorists. This was at a time when the people of Kupwara were in the process of voting, indicating a clear intent to disrupt peace, as was stated by the chief minister Omar Abdullah.
