Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to skip President Pranab Mukherjee’s iftar party, officials said on Tuesday. They said that Modi had instead scheduled a meeting with the Chief Ministers of North-Eastern states to discuss “important development projects” in the region. However, members of the opposition Congress claimed that the chief ministers from at least five states ruled by the party had urged the Prime Minister to reschedule the meeting in order to attend the dinner. The party alleged that Modi did not want to be seen at an event which is also a Muslim tradition.
