Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Chennai on Friday to unveil the National Handloom Day at the University of Madras. In his total address he spoke about the importance of handlooms.

In his visit to Chennai, he met the Chief Minister of Chennai Jayalalitha at her Poes Garden residence and also met the founder and editor of the Tamil magazine Tuglaq Cho Ramaswamy.

"We need to popularize this among our youth. This will give the much-needed boost to the handloom sector," and also added the need for promoting handloom globally.

Jayalalitha submitted a 21 page memorandum to Modi which includes issues relating to water, power sector, textile and central sales tax. She also demands of recovering Katcha Theevu from Sri Lanka.

Modi also said that only 15 percent of handloom clothes are being used by the Indian people, if we just increase our usage by five percent the handloom sector will grow by 33 percent.
