A German professor apologised after an outcry over her rejection of an Indian student's internship application because of 'India's rape problem'. "I am not a racist. I currently have two male Indian students in my lab and accepted four in my Masters course last fall. This was a misunderstanding." The professor cited cases of crime against women in India to deny the student an internship saying this was something she should not support. Germany's Ambassador to India Michael Steiner wrote to the professor in protest saying her move was discriminatory and that India is not a country of rapists. Expressing anger over the remarks, Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari said, "It is extremely unfortunate it is regrettable that a German professor has made a preposterous slur. The German professor, Vice Chancellor of that university and German authorities in India, must apologize publicly.
