'Operation Smile' : Police rescues 200 child labourers in Hyderabad

Hyderabad Police on Saturday rescued 200 child labourers in an early morning raid. The children are reportedly from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and had been brought to Hyderabad to work as labourers in small scale units making bangles and slippers. They were reportedly under the custody of a local wrestler called Yaseen, who has now been arrested. The city police are on a month-long campaign called 'Operation Smile' to help reunite runaway or kidnapped children with their parents. Recently police traced 13-year-old Mohan, who was found working at a tea stall in Mahboobnagar and 10-year-old Venkat who was found sitting alone at a bus stop. They were soon reunited with their families. P Rajesh of Madhapur task force team, said, "The boy was working at a hotel. He had told the owner there that he has no family." Laxmi, an aunt of the child, said, "Our child has finally returned after a month. The police have found him for us. We are very grateful." Police have been screening children found at railway and bus stations, or working in restaurants and micro industries. Deputy Commissioner of Police Rama Rajeshwari said, "People should understand and report to police. It's a crime to make them work."Police have also been uploading data of the missing children online.
