Carrying forward BJP's Dalit agenda, party president Amit Shah on Tuesday shared an afternoon meal with a dalit family in prime minister Narendra Modi's constituency, Varanasi.

However, UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav said, Even I had food with labourers but I did not ask their caste before eating with them, Akhilesh said. BSP chief Mayawati said, It is nothing but melodrama.

Shah visited the family of Girija Prasad Bind and Iqubal Bind in the Jogiyapur village under Sevapuri constituency of Varanasi and had lunch with them. Party leaders said that it was after an invitation from the family that Shah decided to go there.

"I sent a personal invitation to Shahji a few months ago and also left messages for him in his office via phone," Girja Prasad said. Shah, who sat on the ground along with the Bind family members and other party leaders, was served with regular Indian food like dal, rice, chapattis and vegetables.
