First Female President for Nepal

The Vice-chairman of the current ruling Communist Party of Nepal namely Unified Marxist Leninist Ms Bidhya Bhandari was elected as the first female president of Nepal.

Bhandari defeated her opponent Kul Bahadur Gurung of Nepali Congress by securing 327 to 214 votes.

Ms Bidhya is a widow of the late communist leader Madan Bhandari who died in 1991 in a yet unexplained car accident.

Ms Bhandari who is a former defence minister is a cancer survivor. Under the country’s new republican federal constitution it was mandatory to elect the President, Prime Minister, Vice-president, Parliament speaker and deputy speaker.

"I announce that Bidhya Devi Bhandari has been elected to the post of Nepal's president," said Speaker Onsari Gharti Magar, to loud cheers from lawmakers.

Ms Bhandari who is 54 now, is the second women of the Nepal country to get elected for the higher position.

The first was Ms Magar who was elected as the first female speaker of the parliament and now its turn of Bhandari to be elected as the first female president.
