Early Life:

Kumara Chokshanada Sangakkara was born on 27th October 1977 at Matale in Sri Lanka to Kumari Surangana and Swarnakumara Sangakkara. Sanga’s father was an attorney-at-law at Matale. Kumara received his primary and secondary education at Trinity College, Kandy. Recieved Ryde Gold Medal for the best all rounder student. Joined in Law Faculty of the University of Colombo and couldn’t finish it due to cricket tours.

He has two sisters and one elder brother. Sanaga is an active player in Badminton, tennis, swimming, table tennis and cricket.

First Experience:

Sangakkara started playing cricket at college level itself. He represented his school under-13 and the famous cricketer Berty Wijesinghe was his coach for under-15, 17, and 19. At the age of 19 he was awarded the most prestigious The Trinity Lion for exceptional batting and wicket keeping skills.

Soon after that Sangakkara was selected in Sri Lanka A cricket team, 156 unbeaten runs against Zimbabwe A team turned his fate which brought him luck and got selected in Sri Lanka national cricket team.

Personal Life:

Sangakkara married his long time friend Yehali and gave birth to twins, a girl and a boy named Swyree and Kavith.

Records:

He is the first player to score 150+ runs in four consecutive Test Matches. Most double centuries in a career. Most number of dismissals. Most runs in the year 2014. Fastest century by a Sri Lankan. Recently, he was ranked fifth in ICC Top 10 batsmen.

Awards:

Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World (2011, 2014 and 2015), LG People's Choice Award 2011, 2012, ICC ODI Player of the Year 2011, ICC Test Cricketer of the Year 2012, ICC Cricketer of the Year 2012, ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year 2013, ICC Test World XI 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012,  ICC ODI World XI 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, Outstanding Achievement in Sport 2015, The Asian Awards, CEAT International Cricketer of the Year 2015.

Country Cricket, Indian Premier League, Sri Lanka Premier League, Caribbean Premier League.

Cowdrey Lecture:

The youngest person and the first current international player to deliver a speech of the 2011 MCC Spirit of Cricket Cowdrey Lecture at Lords which was praised by the cricketing community. It was a one hour long speech which includes the history and corruption in cricket administration in Sri Lanka. That speech has been described as "the most important speech in cricket history.” In the 2015 O/L syllabus, the English Literature Text book has added this lecture as one of its lessons.

Other than Cricket:

Involved in a number of charities and a member of a Think Wise initiative launched by the International Cricket Council, Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS and UNICEF whose aim is raising awareness about HIV prevention. He is also a partner of Muttiah Muralitharan’s foundation “Foundation of Goodness”.

Retirement:

His retirement from Twenty20 international was on April 214 and from ODI cricket on 18 March 2015. Sangakkara recently on 27 June 2015 announce that he will retire from Test as well and it was confirmed that he will retire after second Test match against India.

The 37-year-old cricketer, was described as one of the “most polished and prudent of batsmen” in cricket.
